Dollar Steadies Slightly & Indian Diamond Market Gets Back On Track
The dollar seems to have steadied a bit against the rupee. Up until the beginning of last week, parcels of polished were being quoted at a different price practically every day as the dollar slid at an alarmingly fast rate against the rupee. As a result of all of this, however, it is difficult to say whether diamond prices have gone up or down. In dollar terms, polished costs more, but in rupee terms, prices have gone down.

The settling of the exchange rate has brought about some optimism that deals will finally be made. There is some movement in the market, primarily because the sightholders and big operators have begun buying parcels to supplement their own assortments. Consequently, it is hard to gauge which markets the goods are destined for.

The US market continues to be an area of concern, with payments now alarmingly overdue. This has also served to exacerbate the severe liquidity crunch in the Indian market.

There is not much enthusiasm over the upcoming JCK Las Vegas show.
