Solitaire International - Indian G&J Industry Setting Standards
THE YOUNG TURKS AND THE NEW TEAM EFFORT
The Indian gem and jewellery industry
is steering into the future with an under-40 generation
at the helm. With new ideas and viewpoints, the Young
Turks have begun to professionalise the management of
the companies they run even though they uphold as their
role models, the family elders who blazed a pioneering
trail to put India at the forefront of the world gem and
jewellery industry.
Dubai Springboard For Diamond & Jewellery
Majors
Apart from being a shopping
Mecca, Dubai has become the marketing and supply hub for
the Gulf region and much of the Middle East as a whole.
Diamond and jewellery majors are now concentrating on
Dubai as the key to their entry strategies for Middle
Eastern markets.
A Centenary of Indian Excellence
In an age when new entrants suddenly
achieve prominence and leapfrog into eminence, the story
of KGK is singularly awe-inspiring. It holds a lesson
for the many traditional and family-owned businesses on
how to keep up with the times and consolidate their position.
Solitaire met up with Navrattan Kothari, chairman of the
KGK group on the sidelines of the firm's centennial celebrations
held in Jaipur recently.
Setting Nakshatra Free
The DTC launched an
initiative to grow diamond jewellery demand in India.
It created a series of brands, each with its own market
niche and its own message to build consumer aspirations.
The initiative has been a runaway success and recently,
the DTC decided to licence out Nakshatra, its pioneering
brand, to a company set up for that specific purpose.
Italian Jewellers Look At Outsourcing
The Italian jewellery
industry has finally confronted reality - high prices
have put it on the endangered list. Outsourcing is no
longer a taboo for an industry that until recently thought
that the "Made In Italy" tag would not be affected by
the flood of low-cost jewellery from Asia and other developing
regions. The new survival strategy envisages even a mere
45 per cent Italian content as being sufficient to merit
the "Made In Italy" label.
Asia-Arabia - Key To The Future?
With the US market having reached
what appears to be saturation and offering little in the
way of avenues for growth, it has become even more imperative
to identify and develop new markets. So far, it has been
almost impossible to identify a market that combines both
the size and buying power of the US. Enter Asia-Arabia.

in India and the development of the Gold Zone in South
Africa.

Argyle diamond mine, located in the Kimberley region of
Western Australia. "The decision to proceed with an underground
mine at Argyle is a significant decision for the Indian
diamond industry and for Rio Tinto," Nirupa Bhatt, Rio
Tinto Diamonds marketing manager told Solitaire.
DTC News
Solitaire got an opportunity to
catch up with Soowon Magyar, who drives the planning and
research function at the DTC. In an industry where information
is difficult to obtain, but of vital importance, the DTC
