De Beers is Top Employer of Choice in African Mining Sector

De Beers has been rated as the top employer in the mining sector in Africa in the inaugural Careers in Africa Employer of Choice Awards in Johannesburg. The company was one of 21 award winners across 54 markets.

Nearly 500 employers were rated in the study, which found that De Beers had clearly succeeded in delivering the attractiveness of its brand to the continent’s professional talent. The results were based on a survey of more than 13,000 professionals representing every sector on the continent and including over 2,700 based outside Africa.

Global Career Company, which ran the survey in association with professional services company Towers Watson, describe the awards as a “uniquely credible barometer of employer attractiveness”.

Rupert Adcock, MD, Global Career Company, said: “What makes these awards unique is that they are based purely on the views of African professionals around the world. De Beers’ success in the mining sector is testament to the brand’s ability to attract talent despite tough conditions in the sector overall.”

According to the study, while base pay is the top attraction globally when considering a new role, only 48% of the African talent pool cited its critical importance, placing it as only the 11th most important factor. For the African workforce, the opportunity to learn new skills and the ability to make an impact come first.

Yves Duhaldeborde, Director at Towers Watson, said: “This research adds a great deal to the debate on how we compensate workers in Africa. It’s clear that, unlike many developed economies, base pay isn’t an important driver and employers need to look at how to incentivise their workforce through initiatives that encourage new skills and promote opportunities to make a difference to the organisation.”
