KP Chair Meets India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry

Close on the heels of his visit to the African nations, followed by his presence at the second Forum on Diamond Valuation in Antwerp, H.E. Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) and Executive Chairman, DMCC, Government of Dubai came to India and held a meeting with the Hon’ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.

During what is described as a “courtesy visit” the two leaders discussed the role of India and UAE in the KPCS. The KP Chair expressed his appreciation of India’s contribution to the international body since its very inception. He also extended full support to India for the Chairmanship of the KPCS in 2019.

The discussions centred on Bin Sulayem’s initiatives like the discussions on the valuation of rough diamonds; preparing for challenges that the diamond industry faces from undisclosed synthetics; and the upcoming Kimberley Process Plenary in November, 2016 at Dubai.

On her part, Smt. Sitharaman conveyed India’s support to the good initiatives that the KP Chair had taken for strengthening the Kimberley Process as a global institution. Various avenues of strengthening trade between India and UAE were also explored.

The KP Chair and the Minister for Commerce & Industry both expressed a desire “to work together for mutual benefit of diamond industry and also for strengthening Kimberley Process”, a press note stated.
