Customs Commissioner Visits IDTC at BDB; Discusses Proposals with Industry and Miners

The Commissioner, Customs, CBEC Shri Sandeep Kumar visited the India Diamond Trading Centre (IDTC) at the premises of the Bharat Diamond Bourse on October 21 to understand the functioning of the country’s first-ever Special Notified Zone (SNZ) for trading of rough diamonds.

In addition to a familiarisation visit to the IDTC premises, Shri Kumar also met with representatives of the GJEPC, BDB and leading mining companies De Beers, Rio Tinto and Dominion Diamonds to understand and review the proposals put forward by the Council on tax simplification procedures to enable commencement of sale of rough diamonds at the SNZ.

During the meeting which took place at the BDB Trading Hall, Anoop Mehta, President BDB made a detailed presentation on the process of import of rough diamonds in the SNZ. Subsequently, Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman GJEPC outlined some of the proposals regarding the way forward and office bearers of GJEPC-BDB and representatives of the mining companies spoke about their concerns and suggestions.

GJEPC was represented by Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman, Ashok Gajera, Regional Chairman (WR), Sanjay Shah, Convener (DPC) and Sabyasachi Ray, ED, while the Anoop Mehta, President and Mehul Shah, Vice President were representing BDB. A number of other senior Customs officials were also present including Shri Shamshad Alam, Joint Commissioner, Airport; Shri Manikaran, Asst Commissioner, PCCCC.
