Court Orders Reinstatement of Anjin’s Dismissed Workers in Zimbabwe

A Zimbabwe Labour Court judge has ordered the reinstatement of about 1,100 employees dismissed by diamond miner Anjin Investments in 2012 after they struck work over a demand for a salary hike, according to reports in the Zimbabwe media.

The workers’ union had appealed against the dismissal in the court without loss of salary and benefits or damages in lieu of reinstatement, the reports added.

The judge noted that the company has failed to furnish the court with minutes of disciplinary proceedings which led to the dismissals. The court therefore granted the appeal in default in terms of Rule 22 (b) (i) Labour Court Rules S.I 59/2006, it was reported.

Anjin Investments is a joint venture between China’s Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (Group) Co and state entities and began operations in 2009.

The media has also highlighted another recent court verdict against the company in an industrial dispute between it and 200 former security guards. The court dismissed an application for a stay on an arbitration ruling in favour of the guards that allowed the auctioning of property worth approximately $800,000.
