Exports from Central African Republic May Restart Soon

Export of diamonds from the Central African Republic may restart soon say media reports from the country. The prospects for resumption of official exports under the KP have brightened following a meeting held between the Minister of Mines and Sodiam, the country’s biggest diamond miner in the presence of KP Chair Ahmed Bin Sulayem,.

The reports state that following the meetings, an agreement was reached between the two parties and exports are likely to start soon.

Diamonds are one of the largest contributors to the export basket of CAR, and earlier used to account for about 40% of total exports, the reports state. However, exports were halted in 2013 due to concerns related to the civil war within the country.

Though the KP had passed a resolution a year ago permitting exports from areas that were under the control of the government, a number of administrative issues had delayed actual implementation.

The reports quoted Bin Sulayem as saying, “I am particularly proud that we have been able to break the deadlock that has obstructed effective exports for so long."

An official KP announcement is awaited.
