GJEPC-GII Host Seminar on Synthetics and Detection at Kolkata

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council – Eastern Region recently held a seminar in association with Gemmological Institute of India (GII), Mumbai on “Detection of Gems & CVD Diamonds”.  A number of GJEPC members and local jewellers participated in the seminar.

Pankaj Parikh, Vice Chairman and Regional Chairman – East introduced the topic and the main speaker, Bakul Mehta, Chairman of GII.

Mehta made the main presentation, drawing the attention of the jewellers from the city to the challenges being faced by the diamond industry with the emergence of synthetic gem quality diamonds in the Indian market. He said that though demand for diamond studded jewellery had increased significantly throughout the country, buyers and sellers have little knowledge about the threats being faced by the sector.

Mehta gave a detailed insight into the manufacture of synthetic diamonds and how they can be differentiated from natural diamonds along with live demonstrations.
