GJEPC Hosts Interactive Workshop in Mumbai on Logistics Issues

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) hosted an interactive workshop on logistic issues with Centre for Trade Facilitation & Logistics (CTFL), IIFT New Delhi at Mumbai on September 11, 2019.

In his Welcome Address, Sabyasachi Ray - ED, GJEPC welcomed the professor from Delhi and said that that the CTFL had been set up by the Logistics Division, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt of India.

The seminar was addressed by Dr. Ankit Kesharwani, Assistant Professor – CTFL, IIFT and Ashok Gajera – Regional Chairman, West, GJEPC.

Dr. Kesharwani, in his presentation, explained how the Logistics Division is working towards the development of a sector specific Logistics Performance Index which would help the gems & jewellery industry to pinpoint critical issues they faced in terms of boosting efficiency in this sphere. He discussed the related policy implications and said that the government is trying its best to understand what was required to further smoothen the process of movement of goods, thus leading to an increase in the overall national and global trade.

On behalf of GJEPC, Dr. Jitarani presented a number of key industry insights and facilitated a discussion among the member-exporters on the points that would really help the industry save time and money as well as increase the revenue inflow to the country. Some of the major points were related to:

1. Procedural issues at Customs such as non-generation of EGM, AEO status which is pending for a long time, Non-Availability of duty free gold, Other scheme benefits and huge time taken for Customs clearance.

2. E-commerce policy and its procedures and benefit of Foreign Post Office as a logistic partner for E-Commerce product export.

3. Non-availability of hand carriage of gem and jewellery

4. Other relevant issues

Based on the interaction Dr. Kesharwani requested members to share the issues they are facing with regards to logistics and the support expected from the Government.
