Lucapa Recovers 133 ct Diamond at Lulo Project in Angola

Lucapa Diamond Company has said that it recently recovered a 133.4 ct stone at its Lulo Project in Angola, besides some other specials ( >10.8 ct). The 133.4 carat stone is the largest recovered from the site to date, the Company added.

It may be recalled that heavy rains during the December quarter had prompted the company to shift its earth moving equipment to higher areas including some new trial mining blocks. One of these was Mining Block 6 from where the company has now recovered four specials – the 133.4 ct stone besides stones of 29.2 cts, 12.7 cts and 11.1 cts.

The largest stone earlier found at the site was a 131.4 ct D colour Type IIa diamond recovered from bulk sampling in 2012.

Lucapa said that though the 133.4 ct stone is not of high quality, both the 29.2 and the11.1 ct stones are D colour. These recoveries along with other six stones recovered earlier, underline the fact that Mining Block 6 is a signiificant sourse of large alluvial diamonds.

CEO Stephen Wetherall said he was delighted with the results. "The 133.4 ct stone is a compound diamond that is unlikely to have travelled very far from the primary source and its relative proximity to our Mining Block 8 and other high priority kimberlite targets is, we believe, very significant.”
