Ministry of Mines & Gemological Institute of Nigeria to Prepare Master Plan for Development of G&J Industry

The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Government of Nigeria and the Gemological Institute of Nigeria (GIN) will collaborate to design and implement a strategy for the development of the jewellery and gemstone industry in Nigeria, according to statements published in the local media.

The reports quote Project Coordinator, Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification (MinDiver), Linus Adie, as saying that the aim was to develop a sustainable master plan for a vibrant G&J industry that “would help in poverty alleviation, job and wealth creation”.

Adje was reported to have said that at the first stage, MinDiver would launch a major sensitisation drive, and would then work for the “expansion of the local market, skill acquisition and training of artisans”.

The reports stated that the country would try to develop a template similar to that implemented in countries like India, Sri Lanka and Germany, with workshops that would bring together artisans engaged in design, cutting, and crafting all at one location.

Adje also told the media that jewellery production contributes hugely to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of these nations, which he added, was the path Nigeria wanted to follow.

The Project Coordinator also said one of the components of the development plan was to conduct vocational training for artisans across the country.
