New Premises of GII’s Diamond Detection and Resource Center Inaugurated

Diamond Detection and Resource Center (DDRC) being operated by Gemmological Institute of India (GII) moved to its permanent premises within the Bharat Diamond Bourse recently. The Lokarpan Ceremony of the new location was performed by GovindbhaiDholakia of SRK and Ramnikbhai Shah, of Venus Jewel in the presence of Vipul Shah, Chairman GJEPC, Anoop Mehta, President, BDB and Bakul Mehta, Chairman GII. The function was attended by a number of senior members of the industry.

DDRC has been operating within the Bourse for the last year. It was set up to provide certification as well as detection of synthetic diamonds with the aim of promoting fair trade with full disclosure. The centre is equipped with all the necessary instruments required for identification such as Automated melee Screening Machine (AMS ) developed by De-Beers, Diamond Check, Diamond Sure, Diamond View, Diamond Plus, Diamond Spotter, FTIR Spectroscopy, Raman Spectrometer and D Screen.

The centre will also offer loose diamond grading services as per international standards as well as grading and certification of diamond jewellery.

Lauding the GII for this initiative, GovindbhaiDholakia said that fraud may fetch some temporary gains, but only those who develop their businesses on principles of honesty and integrity can ensure long term, stable profits.

Ramnikbhai Shah congratulated the GJEPC and the BDB for their support to the GII in the setting up of the DDRC, while Anoop Mehta called upon the members of the trade to take advantage of the service, adding that members of trade bodies were being given attractive rates.

Vipul Shah said that transparency and ethics were vital because the reputation of the industry and livelihood of millions of people in it was at stake. “I urge the trade to take help of this centre fully to eradicate the elements who tarnish the image of the industry by doing undisclosed mixing of synthetic diamonds with natural diamonds.”

Bakul Mehta noted that DDRC has already tested and identified over 20,000 diamonds till date, adding, “I am happy to announce that there were only few synthetics we have come across so far.”
