IIGJ Udupi Holds First Convocation Ceremony

IIGJ-Udupi conducted its first convocation ceremony on March 26, 2019, marking a key milestone for this unique, one-of-a-kind institution in South India.

first batch of 36 students who had completed their courses received their certificates from two industry dignitaries – Mahender Tayal, GJEPC Chairman Southern Region and Nagaraj Acharya, President Udupi Jewellery Association. Surya Rao, Asst. Director GJEPC South Region as well as some other members of the local trade were also present on the occasion.

IIGJ Udupi was set up by GJEPC in association with National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. It has given students and craftsmen from the region an opportunity to receive formal education and vocational training and improve their career propsects in the G&J industry. The Udupi region has a rich jewellery heritage, with over 100 jewellery retailers and a workforce comprising over 5,000 artisans and craftsmen.

This is the sixth IIGJ established by GJEPC in India. IIGJs have earlier been set up in Mumbai, Jaipur, New Delhi and Varanasi.
